TUMI supported cities in achieving their sustainable mobility goals through the TUMI Challenges. Cities in developing countries and emerging economies faced bigger challenges than ever before. Innovation was not optional anymore; it was necessary so that cities could continue to deliver results and improve the lives of their residents.
Looking ahead, TUMI is committed to further supporting cities in their quest for sustainable mobility. With technological advancements and a rapidly changing world, innovation is more important than ever before. TUMI is dedicated to bringing new and innovative solutions to the table, empowering cities to overcome their mobility challenges and create a better future for their citizens.

200k TUMI Challenges

From 2018-2021, the Global Urban Mobility Challenge supported cities around the world with up to EUR 200k for their innovative pilot projects to start the urban mobility transformation.The TUMI Global Urban Mobility Challenge, sponsored by BMZ, is an initiative to support local leaders in their mobility transformation efforts.

Covid Challenges

Through the TUMI COVID Challenges, cities receive the urgent support they require. With cycling as a mode of transport having proven particular resilience throughout challenging times, many of the TUMI COVID Challenges focus on promoting and improving the urban cycling networks. This way, the TUMI COVID Challenges do not only ensure resilient urban mobility systems, they also accelerate the sustainable mobility transformation!

Cuenca, Ecuador

The City of Cuenca set their sights on creating a leader in sustainable mobility within Ecuador. Their focus on sustainable solutions such as electric mobility in the public transport sector, was expanded at the beginning of corona pandemic.

Safetipin App for Bogotá, Colombia

More safety in public spaces and transport for women

The project "Me Muevo Segura" (I move safely) in Bogotá addressed the issue of fear of violence and sexual harassment by mapping the street and cycle network, implementing interventions in mass public transport, and redesigning public spaces to increase the comfort and security of women and girls.

A public transport and health service for Singra

With our project we introduced ten e-rickshaws as a means of public transport as well as two emergency medical service vehicles.With that, together with the construction of an e-rickshaw garage and extended safety training for drivers.

Bicycle Sharing Program in Hoi An City, Vietnam

First steps towards shared mobility

Mobility in Hoi An is mostly based on motorbikes and cars, as the trend of “shared mobility” has not caught on for the non‐motorized transport (NMT) sector. The project focused on piloting cycling infrastructure and establishing the Bike Sharing program to foster shared cycling mobility as a viable transport solution.

Moving people towards improved access and safety

The project aims to create enhanced accessibility of the Ro-Ro jetty node, which is the main node of Fort Kochi Island. By improving traffic flow and coordination between different modes (public and private), including NMT, the project will show how reduced vehicular-pedestrian conflicts and enhanced walkable conditions for locals and tourists can be beneficial for all.

The "Dar City Navigator"

The use of public transport was not plannable in Dar Es Salaam due to the lack of real time information. The Agency envisaged an app that can provide real-time information and services of transport options for the residents and visitors of Dar es Salaam (including BRT, daladala and shared mobility services and NMT).

Shared 3-wheeler Electric Transport in El Kelaa des Sraghna, Morocco

Shared transport system with 25 e-tricycles for transport of goods

The project has introduced a shared transport system with 25 e-tricycles (including 5 with food cooling systems) for the transport of goods in El Kelaa des Sraghna and adjacent rural municipalities of the province.

I am proud to have been part of the TUMI team that implemented so many projects aimed at supporting cities in achieving their sustainable mobility goals. With the collective efforts of the TUMI Team, we have helped cities in developing countries and emerging economies to overcome their mobility challenges and improve the lives of their citizens. A special thanks is extended to Mr Armin Wagner for his vision and support to lay the groundwork for the project implementation.

Looking towards the future, TUMI team is committed to bringing new and innovative solutions to the table to address the changing mobility landscape. Frederic Tesfay - Project Manager

Frederic is a mechanical engineer by education who transitioned into project management, beginning in the field of construction. After working for two years in the USA, he spent five years working for GIZ in Africa, focused in on-the-job training for large scale construction. Throughout his career, he developed strong project management skills, which has enabled him to successfully manage projects in technical education, sustainable mobility and digital transformation around the globe.
