02 Dec - 05 Dec 2024 Fortaleza (Brazil)
Fortaleza Workshop with C40 on Active Mobility and E-Buses
Urban mobility is a cornerstone of quality of life, well-being, and the enjoyment of rights. In Latin America, Individual motorized transport dominates, partly due the lack of dignified urban mobility alternatives. As a result, urban mobility often reflects and intensifies broader social inequalities. Addressing these disparities requires rethinking public spaces and mobility systems through a lens of social inclusion. Fortaleza, Brazil, exemplifies how cities can prioritize active mobility to achieve sustainability and inclusivity. With policies focused on pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. Fortaleza has expanded its cycling infrastructure by 550% since 2014 trough ongoing efforts, including sustainable accessibility Plan (PASFOR) and Fortaleza 2040 Plan, emphasize inclusive urban development and sustainable mobility, positioning the city as a national reference in active mobility.
The Workshops aim to Identify the current state of local equity, diversity and inclusion polices for active mobility in participating cities; to identify and discuss the main challenges and obstacles in integrating this polices; and to propose concrete actions for developing a shared regional agenda, prioritizing actionable and inclusive mobility polices.
The workshop is expected to deliver several key outcomes: a Latin-American regional map overview of equity, diversity and inclusion policies for active mobility; a common road action rout for establishing a collaborative working group for 2025-2026; and comprehensive documentation, including an internal report detailing key insights, lessons learned and recommendations, as well as a public report summarizing the workshop findings and policy recommendations.
