WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities helps create accessible, equitable, healthy and resilient urban areas for people, businesses and the environment to thrive. Together with partners, it enables more connected, compact and coordinated cities. The Center expands the transport and urban development expertise of the EMBARQ network to catalyze innovative solutions in other sectors, including water, buildings, land use and energy. It combines the research excellence of WRI with 15 years of on-the-ground impact through a network of more than 250 experts working from Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Mexico and Turkey to make cities around the world better places to live.

    Sergio Avelleda

    Sergio Avelleda is the Global Urban Mobility Director in WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, a program galvanizing action to help cities grow more sustainably and improve quality of life in developing countries around the world through developing environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable solutions. Sergio leads a team of global experts in urban mobility who are involved in different projects dedicated to improve urban mobility, reduce fatalities caused by traffic, to implant disruptive new mobility solutions around the world.

    Sergio is former Secretary of Mobility and Transports in Sao Paulo, former CEO of the suburban trains company (CPTM) and subway company (Metro de SP) in Sao Paulo.

  • Ani Dasgupta

    Ani Dasgupta

    Ani Dasgupta is Global Director of WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, a program galvanizing action to help cities grow more sustainably and improve quality of life in developing countries around the world through developing environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable solutions. Ani leads a team of global experts in sustainable transport, urban development and building efficiency, as well as its engagement across air quality, low-carbon energy, governance, water risk, and associated areas. The Ross Center works in approximately 100 cities, with over 200 experts based around the world.

    Ani serves as WRI Director of the Coalition for Urban Transitions, Special Initiative of the New Climate Economy (NCE), a global partnership of 20-plus economic and policy research institutes, city networks and private companies, of which WRI Ross Center is the Managing Partner. Through an independent, evidence-based approach, the Coalition is a major new international initiative to support national decision-makers to unlock the power of cities for enhanced national economic, social, and environmental performance, reducing the risk of climate change and maximizing benefits for people and the planet.

  • Sebastian Varela

    Sebastian Varela

    Sebastián is the Manager, Strategy Development & Performance, for WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. He supports the program’s Executive Team in shaping and piloting new strategies, and monitors strategy performance to guide informed decisions for strategic growth. Sebastian also leads the program’s scaling strategy, which aims for amplifying the adoption of good practices through capacity development, knowledge dissemination and improved collaboration among stakeholders (More information at thecityfixlearn.org).

    Prior to joining World Resources Institute, Sebastián served as project coordinator in WRI's sustainable urban mobility initiative EMBARQ in Mexico, where he managed a technical assessment team assisting PROTRAM, a national program supporting the implementation of massive transport systems in Mexican cities.
