Blooming Stops: How Public Transport Can Become a Home for Biodiversity

The joint inititative “Blühende Haltestellen” (“Blooming Stops”) by the Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung (German Wildlife Foundation) and the Hamburg Transport Association (hvv) has transformed species-poor patches of grass around transit stations into vibrant havens for wild bees and other insects. Nature-positive transport infrastructure: A Conversation with Evan Freund (WWF)

While climate considerations are increasingly integrated into transport planning, ecosystems and biodiversity remain largely overlooked, despite posing equally severe systemic risks. At WWF, Evan Freund manages programming around infrastructure design, finance, and development, including the five-year Greening Transportation Infrastructure Development (GRID) Integrated Program. Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), GRID focuses on incorporating biodiversity […]

Corridors that connect: Learnings from Europe’s TEN-T experience

With the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), Europe has demonstrated that interoperable, well-managed networks accelerate regional integration, boost economic development, reduce logistics costs and create high-quality jobs. TEN-T shows how standards, governance and digital interoperability reduce fragmentation and shorten the time to implementation. Rail serves as the backbone of the TEN-T strategy as it has a […]

TUMI Update August

Dear Friends of TUMI, Transport planning runs on data. Where to put a bus lane, how to price a corridor, which street to make safer — every good decision depends on knowing what’s actually happening on the ground. And yet many cities plan under exactly the opposite conditions: patchy data, systems that don’t talk to […]

Data, Digital Solutions & AI in Transport Planning – Help Us Map the Global Picture

Digital tools and Artificial Intelligence are no longer a distant prospect for transport planning – they are already part of everyday practice in many places around the world. But how far has this shift actually progressed? What data are planners realistically working with, which digital and AI applications have moved beyond the pilot stage, and […]

Why Railways Are the Backbone of Transport Corridors

Roads usually get the attention when people talk about trade and transport corridors. They are visible, flexible, and reach almost everywhere. But it is rail that makes the real difference when it comes to moving large volumes of goods and people over long distances in a reliable, affordable and low-emission way. High capacity, high resilience […]

TUMI Update April

Dear Friends of TUMI, Ten years ago, TUMI set out with a simple premise: that the way cities move people shapes everything else – opportunity, health, equity, climate. This April update is a small reflection of how much ground that idea has covered. In this edition, we’re looking ahead to our annual conference in Berlin […]

Constructive Demand Destruction: Rethinking Transport to Save Oil

Fabian Becker, Daniel Moser, Armin Wagner March 2026 As fuel prices skyrocket and supply chains fracture, the transport sector faces a fundamental challenge: how to decouple economic activity from oil consumption overnight.   In this context, the term “demand destruction” refers to a sustained reduction in the consumption of a commodity caused by economic pressures […]
