Transforming urban transport systems in India through efficient, people-centric, and low-carbon mobility solutions.
The Green Urban Mobility Partnership (GUMP) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to support and encourage environment friendly sustainable urban transport projects.
Its goal is to promote more efficient, people-centric, and low-carbon mobility solutions. BMZ is providing concessional loans through KfW Development Bank over a period of five years for sustainable improvements to urban mobility infrastructure in India. Technical cooperation is being provided by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) to enhance the capacities of national, state and local institutions and decision-makers for designing sustainable, inclusive and smart solutions for easy and affordable mobility.
GUMP falls under the umbrella of the SUM-ACA (Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action, Accessibility) project, which is being implemented through a partnership between GIZ and MoHUA. This collaborative initiative aims to promote sustainable urban mobility, improve air quality, take climate action, and enhance accessibility in urban areas throughout India.
SUM-ACA is focused on improving sustainable urban mobility in India by supporting and implementing effective transport policies and strategies. Its key objective is to enhance access to safe, reliable, and affordable transport services while minimizing the negative impact of transportation on the environment. This includes promoting the use of non-motorized transport, reducing emissions from the transport sector, and enhancing accessibility.
To achieve these goals, the project employs a multi-stakeholder approach that involves collaborating with government agencies, civil society organizations, private sector partners, and international organizations. Some of the measures being implemented include the development of integrated public transport systems, promotion of active mobility through cycling and walking, deployment of electric vehicles, and creation of low-emission zones. Through these efforts, SUM-ACA is working towards creating sustainable and livable urban environments in India.
Funded by BMZ, both GUMP and TUMI are actively supporting India’s sustainable mobility transformation.
