Transport planning runs on data. Where to put a bus lane, how to price a corridor, which street to make safer — every good decision depends on knowing what’s actually happening on the ground. And yet many cities plan under exactly the opposite conditions: patchy data, systems that don’t talk to each other, and numbers that simply don’t exist for the people who need them most.

This edition is about closing that gap. AI and digital tools are on every conference panel and in every strategy paper right now — but what’s really being used, and what still gets in the way? We’re asking that question directly through a new global survey (please take five minutes for it — see below), and in the meantime our network keeps building the evidence base: open datasets, infographics, a data poster, and free training that’s about to reach even more people.

But data is only ever the starting point. The numbers tell you that fewer women cycle; they don’t tell you why. Throughout this issue you’ll find work that pushes past the figures to the lived experience behind them — because that’s where better mobility actually begins.
