Joint GIZ and WCA training workshop: Promotion of cycling infrastructure at Velo-City in Dublin

Worldwide there is a consensus on the growing need to introduce or expand cycling infrastructure in the cities. While technical problems can be solved using innovative solutions found by best-practice from around the globe, one main problem remains: How to promote and finance cycling infrastructure?

GIZ (German Agency for International Cooperation) and WCA (World Cycling Alliance) therefore organize a training workshop on promoting and financing of cycling infrastructure as a pre-event of the Velo-City conference 2019 in Dublin, Ireland. This workshop is for practitioners from city councils in the department of urban planning, transport and traffic as well as decision-makers around the world. The workshop aims at:

  • • Raising awareness on the importance of funding cycling infrastructure
  • • Information on different financial aspects and funding options for cycling infrastructure,
  • • International exchange of experiences and best-practice in policy-making and financing

Two high-level key note speakers on financing cycling infrastructure WCA president Raluca Fiser and Amanda Ngabirano, WCA Uganda will introduce the challenges and options for promoting cycling infrastructure followed by a roundtable presentation of best practice cases on promoting cycling infrastructure: by Oluwaseun Sonoiki – Corporate & Legal Secretary at Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Lagos, Nigeria and Tomás Martins, CEO, Tembici, Brazil. The afternoon session will be interactive to allow all participants to discuss their problems and challenges in promoting and financing cycling infrastructure together with experts. The aim is to share knowledge on solutions and ideas, to solve common problems and to find paths for a suitable financing of cycling infrastructure on local level. Participants will receive tailor-made solutions for their challenges.

The participation at the training workshop is free of charge. Catering during the training workshop will be provided.
