Avoid-Shift-Improve framework explained in 20 seconds
Ensuring a high quality of life in cities means acting now to reduce CO2 emissions for both people and the climate. This requires a paradigm shift in mobility and urban planning, which the Avoid-Shift-Improve framework provides. It is needs-based, people-centric, and holistic, consisting of three pillars:
- Avoid/Reduce: Plan cities compactly and transport-oriented to reduce motorized travel and trip lengths, including Transport Demand Management.
- Shift/Maintain: Prioritize active mobility (walking and cycling) and public transport for their low emissions per person and kilometer, enhancing individual trip efficiency.
- Improve: Optimize vehicle and fuel efficiency and public transport operations. For motorized transport, the future lies in electric mobility powered by renewable energy sources.
