TUMI E-Bus Mission Update | February 2023

A new year has begun and our monthly Update is back, after the Holiday Season!

We are happy to communicate news from our cities across all regions with you: the electric transition didn’t take a break and a lot has been going on. From Latin America to Africa and India, the joint work with our partners and local actors is translating into the deployment of more e-buses, the reduction of further CO2 emissions, and the improvement of air quality in various cities.

This month, we are also happy to launch a series of videos on the main focus areas of the E-Bus Mission. You will be able to find out more about our work, first hand from city officials, local authorities and operators.

We hope you enjoy reading!

Number of the Month

11,915 e-buses ordered in India in less than one year!

India is taking amazing steps in its electric transition and has managed to secure 11,915 e-buses in less than one year with the support of the TUMI E-Bus Mission.

First, through the Grand Challenge, demand was aggregated for 5,450 e-buses across five cities. This collective procurement strategy, which concluded in April 2022, was led by the Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power. Then, under the National Electric Bus Program (NEBP), a first tender for 6,465 e-buses was floated this January. The units will run in six Indian states, and the prices discovered, which don’t include any subsidies, are 29% lower than diesel buses!

second tender of 4,675 e-buses has already been announced under the NEBP. The Program aims to aggregate demand for public bus transport agencies and to deploy 50,000 e-buses across the country by 2030.
